Why it’s important not to miss the “missing pieces?
A nurse consultant noticed that an congenital spinal defect was documented on a previously unnoticed supplement in a radiologist’s report. Testimony revealed that the congenital defect was the true cause of the litigant’s problem rather than a slip and fall which had been the basis of the suit.
Result: The case settled for $800,000 less than the demand
She documents and knows where to find discrepancies or missing information. Cost less than a physician expert charges approximately $350.00 an hr. It took him 4 hours to do an initial case review, that’s $1400.00. It was a negative review and wasted money.
In today’s healthcare patient’s will go to different appointments. Maybe trying to hide the fact that they have a congenital issue and don’t want this discovered. Knowing what to research in current documents to find that missing piece is crucial in deciding to take the case. Records not previously obtained from an evaluating Neurologist held the key to the plaintiff's case.
Results : The plaintiff's attorney settled the case for $300.000 more than had first been offered to settle.
The American College of Radiologist, or ACR website is a wealth of information. I have used it many times.
Why are more attorney’s hiring a nurse to do case reviews instead of physicians?
Suffice it to say that any delay on surgery for a perforated viscus is not acceptable unless the patient is unstable and could not tolerate the procedure for fear of greater morbidity and mortality due to the procedure. Even 6-8 hours can be too long. As soon as a viscus is thought to be perforated, a surgical consult should be obtained and surgery made the number one priority barring patient instability.
Why use a Nurse to review your cases and not an MD?
· Because the nurse is involved in the care of the patient for 8 to 12 hours a day.
· A nurse expert will charge approx. $150.00 an hour, that’s $600.00.
Of course physicians make great experts especially specialist. But when it comes to saving money and critical thinking skills the nurse will get the job done timely.
